How do I add clickable variations?
How do I add clickable variations?
Updated over a week ago

Clickable variations are added as annotations. To make a variation clickable, we should add some text containing the moves.

While we are doing it, it is important to pay attention to the following:

  • The moves should be between ( ) brackets. The move count should start at the exact same move number as the move to which we are adding the clickable variation.

  • All moves that are inserted should be legal.

  • Moves should be separated from move numbers by one dot (.) for a White move or three dots (...) for a Black move (if we are starting a clickable with a Black move)

  • Captures should be marked with “x”.

  • Standard English notation for pieces should be used.

  •  Castles should be marked with letters O-O, and not zeroes (0-0).

In the below screenshots, you can see how the clickables with annotation look in read-only mode and also how they look from the 'edit variation' screen.

An important point is that if you mention a square or a move in your commentary, it will be picked up as a clickable move for the board unless you bold it like this **e4** or insert it between {} brackets. In both cases, everything between these markers will not be clickable.

In the screenshots below, the clickables would be broken without the brackets because the square d4 is mentioned in the annotations (so it would break the clickable without the brackets - note how it is bolded within the clickable with the brackets included instead).
