I want to find a position in a course!

If you constantly find that your games reach a certain position where you're not sure what the best continuation is, it's a good idea to try to find a course that covers your problem position. Or maybe you already own a course with that variation but you're not sure in which variation it was? Here's how to find it!

This can be done in two ways, either by using the opening explorer or by looking up a position through our analysis board.

If you want to set up a board with the position you're looking for, there are several ways of going about this, but it's easiest if you use a FEN. You can grab a FEN on the analysis boards of most popular playing sites, but on Chessable, it's easiest on the board editor

Use the opening explorer

To open the opening explorer select 'Tools' from the top menu and then click 'Opening Explorer'.

In the opening explorer, you can just play all the moves leading up to the position you want. This is made easier because you can also just click the moves in the column on the right which will show the most commonly played moves.

When you have reached the position you're looking for, simply click the green 'Search courses for position' button:

Finding the position in a course

After clicking 'Find in courses' you will be shown all courses that contain this position. If you were looking for a new course to buy, now is a good time to pick a course that you think looks interesting.

If you already own a course with this position, clicking that will show you all the variations in which your position occurs so that you can easily revisit the instructions or the relevant part in the video.

Here's a tip, for when you see a free course that looks interesting, but that you don't already own:

Click it to be taken to the course homepage, where you can get it for free by clicking 'Get for free'. Then click 'Back' in your browser - it's the <-- arrow that you'll usually find at the top left of your browser window. This will take you back to your search results where you can now click the course again to be taken directly to all the variations in which your position occurs.

Setup the position on the board

To set up a position select 'Tools' from the top menu and then click 'Setup position'.

Here you can freely drag pieces on and off the board to reach the position you like.

When you have reached the position you're looking for, copy the FEN to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing CTRL-C on your keyboard or right-clicking the highlighted text and selecting 'Copy' with your mouse.

Using a FEN to look up a position

Now select Tools --> Analysis board from the top menu.

You will get to the analysis board, where you can now paste your FEN by replacing the existing FEN with the one from your clipboard. Delete the existing FEN, then press CTRL-V on your keyboard or right-click the field and select Paste. Then press Enter on your keyboard.

You should now see your position on the analysis board. Now click the magnifying glass icon highlighted in the picture to find this position in all Chessable courses.
